Dear Parents,                     October 27, 2014

This week in first grade, we are learning…

Language Arts: We will be finishing up theme 3 in our reading series this week.  Our reading strategy is “questioning”.  Before reading a story, we look at the cover, the title and the pictures and make a prediction about what the story will be about.  While making our predictions, we ask ourselves questions.  The comprehension skill that will help us with this reading strategy is categorizing.  Grouping things together will help us answer our questions and help us understand the story.  Our phonics focus this week is words with ‘r’ clusters and contractions with ‘s.  Our grammar focus this week will concentrate on the action part of sentences.

Spelling: Our spelling words are from unit 13 – clusters with r (such as drop and trip). The words are on Spellingcity.com. Our test will be on Thursday!

Math: We are wrapping up with Unit 3: Visual Patterns, Number Patterns, and Counting. This week we will be reviewing money (pennies, nickels, and dimes), practice collecting data, and use dominoes to help with addition. We will be taking our test at the end of the week!

Religion: We will be reading from our Family Life Series this week. Our lesson is titled: Child of God. We will also begin memorizing for our Saints Parade on November 7th. As a reminder, your child will need a costume for the parade. If you are having trouble finding something, I recommend looking at a Halloween store for a basic tunic/dress.

Science: In science we will continue our study of animals through our discussion of night-time creatures or nocturnal animals!

Social Studies: We will continue with Unit 2: At Home With My Family. This week we will finally get a chance to take a look at tools used long ago.
