Dear Parents,                     September 28, 2015

A BIG “Thank You!” to the parents that volunteered in our classroom on Friday for Primary Centers! The students had a wonderful time!

This week First Graders are learning…

Language Arts: We have completed theme 1 in our reading series so we will be starting theme 2 – “Surprise!” this week.  We will be reading stories that have a surprise in them.  Our reading strategy this week is questioning and the comprehension skill that will help us is noting details.  As we read, we try to pay attention to details within the story.  Paying attention to the details, using the pictures, and questioning why events are happening will help us to understand the story. Our phonics focus this week is the short sound of /o/ and d, l, w, and x. Our grammar focus is using an uppercase letter for names.

Spelling: Our spelling words are from unit 7 and will focus on the short sound of /o/ as in “octopus” or “October”. The words are on Spellingcity.com. Our test will be on Thursday this week.

Math: We are moving right along with Unit 2: Numbers are Everywhere. This week we are focusing on number models and number stories. We will end the week by taking our test.

Religion: We will begin our discussion on Baptism, which will come from Chapter 5 in our textbooks.

Science: We will be taking our test on Monday and Tuesday will have us observing our Lima Beans from a previous experiment.

Social Studies: We will be wrapping up our Unit 1: School Days and taking our test on Thursday!
