Dear Parents,                 April 14, 2014

Our reading strategy this week is evaluating.  The comprehension skill that will help us with evaluating is story structure.  Knowing the setting, the characters, the problem, and solution in the story and being able to sequence the events will help us evaluate the story. Our phonics focus this week is on base words and the endings –es, -ies.  These endings have the /ez/ sound as in reaches and bunnies.  We are also working with the prefixes un- (not) and re- (again).  Our grammar focus is on the proper usage of the words was and were.  We will not have a spelling unit this week as it is a shorter week. In addition, we will be picking our poems for our speech contest this week in class so that you may practice them over spring break. The poems must be memorized by May 5th for in class presentation.

In math this week, we will be wrapping up our math chapter on development of fact power! This way we will start fresh when we return from spring break.

In religion we will spend our time with Benjamin’s Box and focusing on the true meaning of Easter.

We will also wrap up our science chapter on seasons, which means we will be taking our test during the week.

In social studies we continue to study My Country, My Heroes with a special focus on Independence Day!
