Hello Second Grade Families,

I can’t believe we are beginning the month of October this week.  We are entering our second and last week of ITBS testing. I have spread out the testing so as not to be so overwhelming. The second graders are doing their best staying focused during our ITBS testing.   We are looking forward to our last day of testing on Friday.    Please help your child do their very best on the ITBS testing by having them get a good night’s sleep, eat breakfast and pack a snack for recess.  There will be days we continue testing after recess and I would like them reenergized for the test.  We cannot wait until next week so we may start back into our “normal” routine.

Reminders:

Tuesday and Thursday:  P.E. (Water will be sold at school for $1.00)

Thursday:  Library books are due on Thursday.  Your child cannot check out books if they are not returned.

Friday:  Noon Dismissal

HERE’S A QUICK LOOK AT OUR WEEK (INCLUDING ITBS TESTING):

HOMEWORK

Reading Log

Fluency

IXL:  A.5 & E.5 ( Your child should spend a minimum of 20 minutes a week on IXL)

WorkPacket Folders:  Work will be sent on the first Tuesday of every month with family envelopes instead of on Wednesday’s.  You will then receive the next “workpacket” (classwork/tests/any graded work) two weeks after the first Tuesday of every month.  Please continue signing the Tuesday WorkPacket Folder to confirm you have received their work.  If you have any questions, please send me an email. J

Flat Stanley:  Please continue to look for a family that will be committed to be your child’s pen pal until the end of January.  They must be able to correspond at least once a month.  I sent a letter requesting a host family address which is due on Friday, October 3rd.

STUDENT OF THE WEEK will begin in October.  Names are picked at random, lottery style.  Your child will bring a letter and a poster home on Thursday to be completed and returned on the following Monday. The second grader is to do the writing and decorating, but you can help with ideas and spelling.  If for any reason, your family cannot complete the assignment please send me an email to notify me.

RELIGION:  We took our first Religion Quiz last week.  We started Chapter 2 last week.  Our vocabulary this week will be disciple, union and crucifix.                            We will begin discussing Saints this week to prepare us for our Saint’s project coming soon.

ELA: We will continue reading Julius and indentifying realism and fantasy. We will be predicting/inferring outcomes, reading for fluency and comprehension.  Our focus strategy is monitoring and clarifying as we read.  We will also work on multi-meaning words/homophones/synonyms/antonyms.

Spelling:  We will review spelling words from the last three units.  We will not start a new unit this week.

Writing: Capitalization, punctuation, identifying complete sentences and creative writing.

MATH:  We started working on identifying operations in word problems.  We have learned how to skip count on a calculator.  We have been working on building fluency on our addition facts.  We got started on Chapter 2 last week.  Our goal is to finish 2.3-2.5 this week.  Please go onto everydaymath.com to use it as a resource to support the strategies and skills we are working on in math.

SCIENCE:  We continue learning about the plant life cycle.  We will observe our lima beans we planted two weeks ago.  Our plants LOVE our classroom.  We are also observing some lima beans in a refrigerator and dark closet to see if the environment affects plant growth.

If you have read the newsletter, please send me an email secondgrade@sacredheartschoolventura.org. Your child will receive a sticker.

Blessings,

Mrs. Vazquez
