Hello 3rd Grade Families,

Trimester 1 Progress Reports are scheduled to go home tomorrow. Please take a moment to review these before signing and returning them.

We are busy as always. See below for details.

This week in class…

Math: We will wrap up Unit 2 with our second math test on Wednesday. Good luck!

For IXL homework this week, please complete the following Skills…

R.7 Add & Subtract Money Amounts

R.4 Making Change

R.9 Price Lists

Reading: The class continues to read and discuss a variety of texts in our leveled groups.

This week, the class is learning all about rereading texts. This is different from going back and rereading in that the goal is fluency — speed and accuracy while reading. Students are familiar with this skill as they practice it every week with their fluency homework. However, fluency homework shouldn’t be the only time students are working toward becoming fluent readers. This week’s Parent Pipeline will show you ways to incorporate rereading texts into your regular reading routine.

Word Work: Our next spelling test will be on Friday. As you study at home, I suggest focusing on the sounds each word makes as well as the spelling pattern. Dictation sentences are beginning to incorporate words not featured on the spelling list. Students should be able to apply the skills learned to determine these. Remember to check the back side of your child’s spelling test to see how he or she is doing on this.

Vocabulary: The Unit 2 test will be on Friday, beginning a bi-weekly testing schedule from here on out. The students will be completing this independently, so take some time to review and practice the words at home. The Vocabulary Workshop site is an excellent resource. Instructions for access this can be found on the inside of your child’s planner.

Grammar: We will now skip to Unit 2, Lesson 1: Nouns. The students should be able to identify concrete nouns (teacher, school, folktale) as well as abstract nouns (love, kindness, courage). Use the Grammar Workshop site for extra practice and reinforcement.

Science: The class will be in the lab again, this time exploring how energy travels.

Social Studies: We are learning all about landforms!

Religion: October is all about the Rosary! In keeping with this, we turn our attention to Chapter 4: God Called Mary. Click here for the study guide.

All the Best,

Ms. Espinosa
