Dear Third Grade Families,

Wow! We’re already in mid-October!

This week, as always, is a busy one. Wednesday is a free dress day. Please remember to bring $1 for charity if our child plans to participate. The theme is powder blue and pink in the spirit of cancer awareness. Also, we are still collecting new hats for children with cancer. We have yet to receive any, but I’m sure this is because students are carefully picking out the perfect one for someone in need. Remember that the hat needs to be brand new and still have the tags attached as they are going to a child with a compromised immune system. Please feel free to send these in as soon as you’d like. We look forward to receiving them.

In terms of academics, we will be working on the following:

Math: We will continue subtracting greater numbers focusing on estimating differences and subtracting across zeroes as well as problem solving. We have also added a problem of the week or challenge “Bonus Problem” to our math curriculum. These problems are tricky, often requiring a lot of patience and persistence, but they are also lot of fun.  On Friday, we will have a subtraction quiz.

Science: We will be reviewing chapter 6 in preparation for our first science test on Thursday. I would highly recommend that students study for this test using their “Study Guide” pages that will be sent home on the Tuesday work folders and/or their textbooks. You may have noticed that we also have science homework this week on classifying matter (solids, liquids or gases). Be creative and have fun with it. As with all homework, this will be due on Friday.

Social Studies: We will continue studying different types of maps and begin a chapter on communities in our books. More specifically, we will focus on “Getting Along in a Community” and look at words like cooperate, citizens, laws and consequences.

Language Arts: We will continue to focus on following directions, both in our writing and reading comprehension. We will also continue our study of pronouns looking more closely at subject pronouns.

Finally, in religion, we will continue with our study of the Rosary and learn about the Annunciation as well as the mysteries of the Rosary.

Have a great week!

–Mrs. Espinosa
